2nd Class have been learning about a very special four-legged friend in their History lessons!
He was a stray dog, that became friends with an American soldier named Robert Conroy.
He called the dog Stubby , because of his short tail.
He hid him and brought the dog to France and Stubby comforted soldiers that were injured and saved the lives of many people , by smelling out danger.
French women made him a little coat and he became known as “Sergeant Stubby”. He was a hero when he came back . He met 3 American presidents and he received The Purple Heart award for bravery .
When he died , the New York Times wrote half a page to honour him.
His official name is Sergeant Stubby.
Take a look below to see some of the beautiful writing 2nd Class have done all about Sergeant Stubby. They read a great story about him, written by Michael Foreman. There is an animated film about Stubby that was developed right here in Cork.
